My Best Homemade Peanut Butter Tips

Peanut butter on toast has been a breakfast mainstay for as long as I can remember. I once begged my mom to ship peanut butter across the ocean during a semester abroad in France. Turns out, all you really need is peanuts and a food processor to make your own.

Start with Unsalted Dry-Roasted Peanuts.

Usually, for nut butters, I start with raw nuts and roast them myself before blending. Lately, though, unroasted peanuts have been tricky to find. Dry-roasted peanuts are the perfect solution. Oiled nuts would technically work, but you’d be adding an unnecessary ingredient to your peanut butter.

Choose unsalted peanuts so you can dial in the salt yourself. Double-check the ingredient list before buying (the only thing listed should be peanuts) and taste one before blending. Bad peanuts make bad peanut butter—simple as that.

Use Your Food Processor, Not a Blender.

I’m still firmly on team Food Processor for nut butters, peanut butter included. Nut butters are so thick that blenders—even great ones likemy Vitamix—need a lot of hands-on help to get going. It’s far easier to dump the nuts intomy food processorand let the machine do the work.

I’m happy to report that peanut butter blends far more easily than my othernut butter recipes. Once you’ve made it, you’ll be eager to try them all!

Peanut Butter Flavor Variations

Try one, or try them all! The crunchy cinnamon-honey peanut butter sounds especially wonderful to me.

Naturally Sweetened Peanut Butter

Honey and peanut butter are sheer perfection together, but maple syrup is also fantastic. With homemade, you have full control over the sweetness. I found 1 teaspoon to be lightly sweet, 2 teaspoons noticeably sweet with barely-there honey flavor (it thickens the mixture quite a bit!), and 1 tablespoon tastes like a treat, with a gentle honey note.

Cinnamon Peanut Butter

Try adding ground cinnamon for a warming, cozy spice. Use 1/2 teaspoon for subtle flavor, or up to 1 tablespoon if you’re a devoted cinnamon lover.

Crunchy Peanut Butter

For a little crunch, reserve about 3/4 cup of the peanuts. Blend the rest as directed, then add the reserved peanuts back to the processor and pulse just until they’re broken into small bits.

Mixed Nut Butter

Substitute almonds, cashews, pecans, walnuts, or pistachios for some of the peanuts.
